SCA Announces Inaugural Physician Advisory Board

Industry leading physicians to provide guidance in support of SCA's mission and vision

DEERFIELD, Ill., June 15, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Surgical Care Affiliates, Inc. (NASDAQ:SCAI) ("SCA") today announced its first Physician Advisory Board. The board's purpose is to further SCA's mission to care for our patients, serve our physicians and improve healthcare in America, by providing strategic guidance and industry expertise to the SCA community.

As leaders in the healthcare industry, board members bring deep clinical experience and insight into meaningful trends in surgery, practice management and primary care groups. In addition, the board will provide feedback and direction on SCA's innovation and growth initiatives.

The inaugural board includes:

Bart Asner, MD
CEO and founder, Monarch HealthCare

Dr. Asner is chief executive officer, chairman and founder of Monarch HealthCare, now part of OptumCare, a division of UnitedHealth Group. Monarch is an IPA-model medical group with 2,500 physicians providing care to over 200,000 patients in Orange County and Long Beach, California. Dr. Asner is the current Chair of CAPG, the leading U.S. trade association representing accountable physician organizations. He received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed his residency in pediatrics at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles.

Robert S. Bray, MD
Founder, DISC Sports and Spine Center

Dr. Bray is a pioneer in minimally invasive and outpatient spine surgery. He founded DISC Sports & Spine Center (DISC) in 2006 with locations in Orange County and Los Angeles, and has completed 10,000 successful spine surgeries, 95 percent in the outpatient setting. Dr. Bray headed three spinal programs at St. John's Medical Center, Cedars-Sinai Institute for Spinal Disorders and Century City Hospital. He received his MD at Baylor College of Medicine, where he also completed his residency and fellowship.

Norman H. Chenven, MD
CEO and founder, Austin Regional Clinic (ARC)

Dr. Chenven is founder and chief executive officer of Austin Regional Clinic (ARC), a 300-physician multispecialty medical group that serves the greater Austin, Texas metropolitan area with 21 clinic locations, caring for 380,000 central Texans in seven cities. He has served on physician advisory councils for BCBS of Texas, United HealthCare, and Cigna, the group practice advisory committee of the AMA and the board of directors of the American Medical Group Association. He received his MD from State University of New York Medical Science Center in Brooklyn, attended University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio for postgraduate training and then established a family practice group in Austin.

Thomas M. Deas, Jr., MD
Vice president, physician development, North Texas Specialty Physicians

After retiring from the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Deas resumed his gastroenterology practice in Fort Worth, TX. He served six years as president of North Texas Specialty Physicians an independent practice association (IPA), which currently serves 70,000 Medicare Advantage patients. Following service as board member and treasurer of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, he served as president from 2012 to 2013. He received his MD from Louisiana State University School of Medicine and completed internal medicine and gastroenterology fellowship training at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center.

Stefan W. Kreuzer, MD
Minimally-invasive hip and knee replacement pioneer

Dr. Kreuzer is an innovator in minimally invasive and computer assisted joint replacement. He participates on multiple design teams for the development of the next generation of knee and hip implants and serves on the faculty of the University of Texas Physicians in Houston, Texas. He is a board member of ISTA and the chairman of the masters course on anterior hip replacement surgery with ICJRA. Dr. Kreuzer received his MD from the University of Texas in San Antonio, completed his orthopedic residency in Galveston, Texas and his fellowship in adult joint reconstruction at Baylor College of Medicine.

Daniel Murrey, MD
CEO, OrthoCarolina and Transformant Healthcare Solutions

Dr. Murrey is an orthopedic spine surgeon and CEO of OrthoCarolina and Transformant Healthcare Solutions. OrthoCarolina is one of the largest orthopedic practices in the country with 150 physicians and 1400+ employees in the Charlotte, NC region. Transformant Healthcare Solutions is a management company enhancing physician leadership in value-based care.  Dr. Murrey has led efforts in quality improvement, data management, corporate compliance, and customer service, and is an active researcher and educator, patent holder and developer of multiple spine care devices. He received his MD from Harvard Medical School and completed his residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and spine fellowship at Carolinas Medical Center.

From SCA, Andrew Hayek, chairman and CEO, Goran Dragolovic, senior vice president and Dr. James Grant, regional vice president, will serve the board as company representatives.
